Regular Practice !!!

Stammering Control requires practice and a lot of practise I should say . If you want to control/cure your stammering it is important that you practice daily with discipline. Now what is the practice ???
Read something aloud but in slow speed. Atleast half an hour reading a day is must for the cure. Secondly do some breathing exercises for half an hour more.
Third exercise is similar to breathing exercises but it is meant to cure stammering.
Speak the first sound of the word long......Extend the first letter of the word as much as possible , then just before your final breath, speak the remaning part of the word normally . For E.g   DOCTOR
Say it like this  Do-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ctor . That's It.

A high boost to confidence !!!

Today i went to my speech therapist where we interacted with each other about several topics. As am no more a stammerer i told the other children about my experience .... my problems before the therapy and how did I feel after the therapy. Actually I was quite surprised to see that i can speak to any stranger or a group of strangers without any anxiety or nervousness. Well , Thanks to my speech therapist. One thing i learned today - Stammering requires hard work and determination towards the practice. If you will skip a single day of practice it wont effect immediately but it will surely effect you in future :)

Removing the stigma of stammering

Stammering is not a disease , so it cannot be cured by a medicine. It is a habit and requires time. Don't expect that it can be cured overnight. It needs patience and a lot of patience.

We shall go step by step , and remember never be over confident after each step. For e.g. You mastered step 1 so you think you can jump to step 5 or something directly. No , that's not the way.
The first step is slow down the speech. Slow down the speech as slow as speaking each letter separately . For e.g. The Earth Is Round.....Speak it slowly like T-h-e   E-a-r-t-h   i-s  R-o-u--n-d.
Extend vowels while speaking any sentence. Loudly read from a book or newspaper everyday. Practice this until you feel confident enough that you can speak without stammering with this speed. Then Slowly increase the speed. But ,again, Don't increase it too much.

Secondly, Do exercises to increase the breathe intake. Deep Breathing is a good example of this.
Remember The more you breathe - the less you stammer.

What is Stammering Psychology???

Stammering Psychology is nothing else but thinking you will stammer at a particular moment before that moment has actually arrived. Its the stammering psychology which makes stammering worse.
Let us take an example -
You are in a class, any kind of class in the school. There is a reading going on among the students. The teacher has asked all the children to read individually from the book. As soon as you listen this , you get nervous, tensed, feared , thinking you will stammer when your turns come. You start recalling the text even there are 40 children who has to read before you. But Hey !! Whats the matter , If you will stammer, you will stammer when you read not before 40 children have read. If you will stammer then What's wrong in that ????

The more you fear of stammering - the more you increase , the more you make it worse.
Never Hesitate , fear , or feel nervous that you are going to stammer .

An Experience ........!!!

This is the latest experience which i remember. I was in grade 11 ... It was a usual class of Business studies. My teacher asked me to recall an answer told by her minutes ago. I knew the answer....I knew it all but as soon as I started saying,  I got stuck on the first sentence....i was shocked,  sweat rolled down my whole body. Few seconds after,  A girl started laughing on me. My teacher told me to ignore her,  but i just couldnt ignore her. Anyhow i continued to speak and completed the answer, though while stammering, but yes i completed it. After i finished,  i sat down and dint speak to anybody for around 20 minutes. That girls face was right infront of my face..laughing at the moment when she shouldnt.
I decided not to talk with any girl after that.....No matter whatever is the situation...because it can make my situation worse.
But i should say I was wrong in thinking so.
Never Hesitate to talk...Never Ever,
It will make things worse.

Some Behaviours Common Among Stammerers

Lewis Carroll, the well-known author ofAlice's Adventures in Wonderland, was afflicted with a stammer, as were his siblings.

  • People who stammer always tend to remain alone and not talk to anybody.
  • They avoid talking on phone or in public.
  • Male stammerers avoid talking to girls as they think it would be embarassing. Come on they are also humans......Go and talk to them :)
  • All Stammerers do not stammer when singing , speaking along someone or a group of people.
  • They also dont stammer when they act , or speak when they are listening through Headphones. INTRESTING isnt it ?
  • Loneliness can sometimes make a stammerer arrogant.
  • Stammering has nothing to deal with mental strength , However , Most of the time its just the stammering psychology that make stammering worse.
  • Stammering psychology in simple words means thinking that you will stammer in public , or you will stammer on this particular letter etc.
  • Most of the stammerers are males and tend to be emotional in nature.
